Peter’s involvement at gold mines around Waihi commenced in 1988 when re-development of the closed Martha Gold Mine began to gain momentum for a new open cast mine, and Waitekauri Valley underground gold mine in 1991.

He contributed to the design and implementation of the original minewater treatment facilities and subsequent expansions of the Martha water treatment plant (WTP) in 1999 and 2011. Most recently Enviromex completed the design of a $4m WTP upgrade to the flow reception area and new metals removal plant.

Services provided by Enviromex included:

• • Investigation of the existing minewater treatment plants limits and determination of treatment facilities that could meet the project needs,

  • Evaluation of performance and costs for each conforming method,

  • Consideration of retrofit options to handle multiple inflow sources that resulted in abandoning the existing inlet manifold in favour of the development of a flow reception area blend tank,

  • Development of the preferred concept treatment method including the provision of a process design, general arrangements, equipment duties and selection, functional criteria and communication to the client and a multitude of other consultants and sub-consultants,

  • Detailed design, drawings production and documentation of process, hydraulic, mechanical components of the new plant and the altered chemical handling facilities within an eight week timeframe,

  • Evaluation of tenders and recommendation of preferred tenderer,

  • Technical assistance during the construction phase,

  • Commissioning assistance.

The new plant began operation during 2011 meeting all performance expectations during commissioning. Elements of older parts of the WTP were upgraded to a similar standard as the new plant.
