In 2007 Enviromex NZ was engaged by Cardno of Australia as Team Leader of the process review group for the purpose of auditing water treatment facilities situated throughout South-east Queensland as part of the SEQ Infrastructure Due Diligence Audit.
There were around 30 WTP’s audited against current and likely future performance requirements. These plant ranged in size from small community facilities to very large municipal plants capable of up to 700MLPD.
Most used conventional methods of water treatment involving chemical conditioning of raw water, sedimentation, filtration, disinfection and solids dewatering. Some more advanced plants included taste and odour destruction methods that raised some interesting issues for the process team.
Peter has worked on plants with surface or ground water supplies that place different demands on treatment processes. Iron, manganese and other minerals are common for water supplies from ground water, whereas taste, odour and toxicity can be issues for surface waters prone to blue-green algae that produce geosmin, microcystins and MIB, particularly where storage reservoir conditions promote these organisms and treatment facilities are not set up correctly to manage them.
Facility alterations and/or retrofits are generally sufficient to control these issues. Small community and industrial water needs can generally be served by package plants that are selected to treat the characteristics of a particular raw water quality.
